I used the phrase, “be a lighthouse” in a call with a client recently; the message really hit home so I wanted to share it with you as well.
As entrepreneurs, we can often get stuck spending too much time working IN our business, and not enough time working ON our business. When we’re doing what we love, it can be hard to take breaks or come up for air, but just like diving, the experience will become rapidly less fun the longer we hold our breath.
There have been two times in my life where I pushed myself beyond my breaking point and burned myself out – HARD. Both times, I ignored every warning sign telling me I was going to crash and by the time I realized, it was too late. I hit a mental and emotional wall and my whole life came screeching to a half. I spent six months slinking from my bed to the couch and back again in my pj’s. I didn’t see my friends, I didn’t exercise, and I said f*ck it to even thinking about work. It changed the way I viewed my relationship with myself and my business in a way I will never forget.
Fast forward a few years, and here I am. I’ve finally learned my lesson. I’ve built a thriving business (again), got crystal clear about who I needed in my corner to help me see the areas I didn’t even know needed improving, and have supported so many other entrepreneurs to do the same. That’s not to say I haven’t experienced my fair share of hardship since, but I am gentler and more forgiving with myself than I’ve ever been before. I know where my boundaries are, so I slow down before I run face-first into them.
The key to everything, always, is self-reflection, because when you know yourself, you can lead authentically and create environments, situations, and opportunities that set you up for success. Simultaneously, you can avoid the serious mental, physical, and spiritual consequences of overexerting yourself to the point of burnout.
“Being a lighthouse” to me, means energetically self-selecting and focusing on what lights ME up so I can be a beacon, attracting the right people, at the right time, in the right way. What I’ve noticed over the years, for myself and my clients, is the clearer we are about our vision or greater purpose - who we are, what we’re doing, and WHY we’re doing it – the more ease and abundance we will receive in our life.
Stop chasing. Start attracting. Be a Lighthouse.
